Wine Region

Mahia Peninsula is nestled between two regions, Poverty Bay (Gisborne) and Hawkes Bay with its twin cities of Napier and Hastings. Both are blessed with the hot sunny climate of the east coast, and are among the top wine-producing areas of New Zealand. Gisborne is famous for its Chardonnays, while Hawkes Bay produces some of the country’s best reds. Look for wines grown in the “Gimlet Gravel” area.

Both areas are also blessed with soils that, combined with the benevolent climate, support all kinds of horticulture and farming. Experience the bounty of the land at the many excellent restaurants, or choose to select the freshest produce to take back to Mahia with you. Perhaps buy organic fruit and vegetables direct from the growers at Nuhaka, right at the gateway to the peninsula.

For a real taste of Mahia’s food and community, join in a dinner at Kaiuku Marae, close to Waihinahina. You’ll experience the sort of hospitality you thought had gone from the modern world.

It doesn’t get better than this!
